Hmmm... I think the Lonely Planet has a short section at the back of the book on that.
As for the scammers, I've learned that after a couple days you lose the "deer in the headlights" look of vulnerability, and usually a slight deft wave of the hand, coupled with a slightly furrowed brow and a barely scrunched up mouth, is usually enough to send them away without saying a word.
